That Kitchen Bravery Thing

My daughter is canoeing downstream
in the bathtub. When I ask her what
she’s doing, dipping her paddle again
and again, she replies, "You know,
that kitchen bravery thing."

When I return, she exclaims,
"I’m stirring a pot of men!"
Which she is in fact doing --
vigorously churning chunky dolls
in a plastic pot. "You’re wonderful,"
I hear myself say. Inane adult.

"I’m not wonderful," she yells back,
"I’m spicy!" To be so brazen,
stirring ingredients to an unknown
conclusion, and then to dance naked,
a towel sailing behind you down the hall!
